Dietitian Alka Karnik sheds light on its harmful effects and offers healthier alternatives.

The Health Risks of Ajinomoto

In an exclusive conversation with Local 18, Karnik revealed that just 1 gram of Ajinomoto contains approximately 380 mg of sodium, a dangerously high amount. While it is commonly used to enhance flavour, its excessive consumption can have severe consequences on the body. When purchasing packaged or restaurant-prepared food, always check the ingredient list for Ajinomoto and try to avoid it, Karnik adviced.

Increased Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke

Ajinomoto consumption has been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and even stroke. The excessive sodium content can lead to serious cardiovascular issues over time. Instead of relying on Ajinomoto to enhance flavour, Karnik suggests using natural alternatives such as lemon, ginger, black salt, and turmeric, which provide a similar taste profile without the associated health risks.

Beyond cardiovascular risks, Ajinomoto can be particularly harmful to the liver and overall bodily functions. Regular consumption can disrupt metabolic processes and potentially contribute to long-term health complications.

Safe Consumption Guidelines

For those who enjoy Chinese food, moderation is key. If you crave foods containing Ajinomoto, limit your intake to once a month or every six months, and always be mindful of the quantity, Karnik recommended. Being cautious with food choices can help mitigate the adverse effects of this additive.
