Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed as the new SEBI Chairman, replacing Madhabi Puri Buch whose tenure ends on February 28.
The Finance Ministry had sought applications for the post by February 17.
IAS Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed new SEBI Chairman on Thursday. The 1987-batch officer from Odisha cadre will replace Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year tenure will end on February 28.
The Finance Ministry had sought applications for the post by February 17. Buch’s immediate predecessors, Ajay Tyagi and UK Sinha, had both got extensions as the SEBI chief, with Tyagi serving for four years and Sinha serving for six years in the chair.
Pandey holds a Masters in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK).
Pandey was serving as the Secretary, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance and the Finance secretary before this appointment. Previously, he held the charge of Secretary of three Departments– Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and Department of Personnel and Training.
Before serving as Secretary in the DIPAM, Pandey has held many significant positions in Union Government and State Government of Odisha, in addition to serving a stint in the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
In the Union Government, his previous positions include Joint Secretary, Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), Joint Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat and Deputy Secretary in Ministry of Commerce.
In State Government of Odisha, he served as administrative head in the Departments of Health, General Administration, Commercial Taxes, Transport and Finance. He also served as Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation and Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
