US Fed Meeting LIVE: The US Federal Reserve on December 18 announced a cut in the key interest rates by another 25 basis points to 4.25-4.50 per cent. The decision was announced following the two-day FOMC meeting, which concluded on December 18. Following the rate cut decision, US Fed Chairman Jerome Powell will address reporters at 1:00 am IST.
Ahead of the US Fed decision, the US markets are trading in green with the Dow Jones trading up by 0.35 per cent and Nasdaq was up by 0.25 per cent.
It is the third rate cut by FOMC in three months, with the first rate cut announced in September (by 50 basis points) and second in November (by 25 bps). The first cut in the current rate cut cycle came in September after a gap of four years.
“The Committee decided to lower the target range for the federal funds rate by 1/4 percentage point to 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 percent,” the FOMC said in a statement on December 18.
It added that the recent indicators suggest that economic activity has continued to expand at a solid pace.
“Since earlier in the year, labor market conditions have generally eased, and the unemployment rate has moved up but remains low. Inflation has made progress toward the Committee’s 2 percent objective but remains somewhat elevated,” FOMC stated.
