Columbus Crew forward Cucho Hernández made the move to LaLiga side Real Betis, the MLS club confirmed on Monday.
The fee — a reported $16 million plus add-ons — is a club record for Columbus, and the deal includes a clause that would see the Crew compensated for any future move for Hernández from Betis.
Hernández, 25, spent parts of the last three seasons with the Crew, a period in which Columbus claimed the 2023 MLS Cup — with the forward named the game’s MVP — and the 2024 Leagues Cup. During that time, Hernandez scored 58 goals in 96 league and cup appearances, and was a two time MLS Best XI selection.
He was the runner up for the MLS MVP award in 2024.
“Cucho has played a key role in our Club’s recent success, and we thank him for the everlasting memories he created for our city and for our supporters,” said Crew General Manager Issa Tall. “When we first signed Cucho, he was eager for a chance to fully display his dynamic skillset in Columbus. We have accomplished many of our collective goals together during the past three seasons, and he has earned the opportunity to prove his growth and talent with a return to Europe.
“Cucho is excited for the new challenge, and he will always have a special place in our Club’s history.”
The move marks Hernández’s return to Europe as well as Spain. He was previously on the books of Watford from 2017-22, but during that time he was loaned out to La Liga sides Huesca, Mallorca and Getafe.
Betis is currently in 10th place in La Liga with 29 points from 22 matches, but just three points out of the last qualification spot for European competition.
At international level, Hernández has made five appearances for Colombia, scoring two goals.
