Rudi Garcia named Belgium manager, replaces sacked Tedesco | The Express Tribune

Rudi Garcia has been appointed as Belgium’s new head coach, succeeding Domenico Tedesco, who was dismissed after less than two years in charge.

The 60-year-old Frenchman brings extensive experience to the role, having managed clubs such as Lille, Lyon, Marseille, and Napoli.

Garcia, whose last managerial stint at Napoli ended after just 16 games in 2023, faces the challenge of reinvigorating Belgium following their disappointing early exit at EURO 2024.

The Red Devils, ranked eighth in the FIFA world rankings, also face a Nations League relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.

“We believe Rudi Garcia is the right person to lead the team during this crucial phase,” the Belgian Football Federation stated. The new head coach was officially introduced during a press conference on Friday.

Garcia is no stranger to high-pressure assignments. His managerial journey includes a successful spell at Lille (2008-2013), where he led the club to a domestic double, and a three-year stint at Roma.

He also had brief tenures at Lyon and Al Nassr, managing Cristiano Ronaldo, where he departed by mutual agreement after 10 months.

Belgium’s upcoming fixtures include the Nations League play-off in March and the start of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in June with a trip to North Macedonia. Garcia is tasked with rejuvenating the national squad as they transition from the “golden generation” era.

Domenico Tedesco, who was appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martinez, struggled to deliver results, leading to his dismissal.

Fans’ reactions to Garcia’s appointment on X (formerly Twitter) have been mixed, with many questioning whether the Frenchman is the right choice to guide Belgium back to international prominence.

Garcia’s first tests will likely define his tenure as Belgium’s head coach, with both the Nations League and World Cup qualifiers serving as critical benchmarks for success.
