As Pakistan announced its squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Asad Shafiq, a member of the National Selection Committee, provided valuable insights into the team’s composition.
Shafiq, who represented Pakistan in 147 international matches, including 77 Tests, highlighted the committee’s strategic approach of selecting players who have consistently excelled in domestic cricket, with particular emphasis on those who have thrived under home conditions, ensuring the squad is well-prepared for the upcoming global event.
“The selection process has focused on players who have consistently performed in conditions similar to those they will face in the Champions Trophy. Our approach is horses for courses, ensuring the squad is well-balanced and ready for the challenges of international cricket,” Shafiq stated.
He went on to emphasise the flexibility of the squad, which includes a combination of youth and experience. “The squad has been selected with a clear focus on versatility. Each player has a defined role, providing the captain with a wide range of options,” he said.
After Pakistan dropped their regular opener, Abdullah Shafique, following a disastrous series in South Africa where he recorded three consecutive ducks, and with his partner, Saim Ayub, ruled out due to injury, the former veteran batsman also addressed the issue of who will partner Fakhar Zaman at the opening position.
Fakhar Zaman’s return to the squad has been a key highlight, and Shafiq confirmed that he would be opening the batting alongside either Babar Azam or Saud Shakeel.
“Fakhar’s aggressive approach is vital for our top-order. His opening partner will depend on various factors such as match conditions and strategy, and both Babar and Saud are capable of handling the role effectively,” Shafiq explained.
Shafiq also spoke about the inclusion of emerging players like mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, and middle-order batsmen Kamran Ghulam and Tayyab Tahir.
“These players have shown the temperament and ability to perform in home conditions, and we are confident they can replicate their domestic success at the international level,” he added.
Regarding the bowling attack, Shafiq mentioned the leadership of Abrar Ahmed in the spin department, with support from Khushdil Shah and Salman Ali Agha.
“Our bowling lineup is well-equipped, and with Faheem Ashraf’s all-round skills, we have the flexibility to adapt to different match situations.”
On the injury front, Shafiq confirmed that Saim Ayub, who was in excellent form, will not be part of the squad due to an ankle injury.
“We understand how disappointed Saim must be, especially with his form heading into the Champions Trophy, but his long-term health is our top priority,” said Shafiq.
Shafiq concluded by stating that the upcoming tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand and South Africa will serve as important preparation for the Champions Trophy. “This series will allow us to fine-tune our strategies and ensure the team is fully ready to defend the Champions Trophy on home soil.”
