How to refresh a neglected bedroom and make it blissful



The start of British summer time swings us in many ways… and with longer, brighter days, puts our bedrooms in a whole new light.

Especially if you’ve been undecided with decor, fall short on artistic flair, and in need of a calming environment to spend time in – and most importantly, sleep in.

Bedroom furniture plays a crucial role in the flow of energy within your space,” highlights Lena Gierasinska, head of product and displays at Barker and Stonehouse.

“If your bed frame is creaky, misaligned, or past its best, it can disrupt the harmony of the room, making it harder to unwind.”

She continues: “Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, but old or damaged furniture can subtly impact your mental and physical wellbeing.

“A sagging mattress, for instance, can lead to poor sleep quality, while an overstuffed, outdated wardrobe might contribute to feelings of clutter and stress,” underlines Gierasinska.

With this in mind, experts share their top tips for bedroom bliss…

Upgrade your bed frame

“Your bed is the centrepiece of your bedroom, so an old, creaky, or unstable frame can affect both sleep quality and overall feel of the space,” notes  Gierasinska.“If your bed frame needs replacing, look for one that provides proper support for your mattress and suits your style, whether it’s a sleek upholstered design for a cosy feel; or wooden frame for a timeless, natural look.

Erika Vipas, head of buying at Dreams says: “Japandi and Scandi design are hugely influencing interior trends, especially due to their focus on natural wood material that brings warmth and tranquillity.”

“Spindle and solid wooden bed frames, inspired by these styles, offer a timeless appeal that blends rustic elegance with charm… to complement both traditional and modern interiors,” suggests Vipas.

Invest in a new mattress

If you’re waking up with aches and pains, noticing visible sagging, or feeling lumps and dips, it’s a clear sign your mattress has lost its support and needs replacing, warns Gierasinska.

“If a new mattress isn’t an option right now, a mattress topper can provide a temporary boost in comfort – and add a sense of luxuriousness to the bedroom, improving overall comfort,” suggests Gierasinska.

Depending on your budget, Hannah Hayden, junior buyer for mattresses and bedding at Dreams says they recommend replacing a mattress every eight years.

“After all, we spend about a third of our lives in bed, and a good mattress plays a crucial role in both our health and hygiene,” observes Hayden.

Moreover, with mattress technology constantly evolving, she says there are now a huge range of options to suit every type of sleeper, whether you struggle with back pain, overheating, or allergies.

Declutter your wardrobe

“It’s important furniture in your bedroom aids your daily routine and reduces stress,” notes Gierasinska. “A cluttered, overflowing wardrobe can make your bedroom feel chaotic – and this can have an impact on the equilibrium of the space.”

Start by decluttering suggests the interiors expert. “A good place to start is the ‘one year rule,’ when deciding what to keep and what to discard.

“It’s important to ask yourself questions like: Have I used this in the last year? Does this item serve a purpose?” She continues. “These questions help you assess the true value of the item, and determine whether it’s needed in your home.”

Introduce multi-functional furniture

A clutter-free space promotes better relaxation, and choosing furniture with built-in storage is a great way to keep things tidy, says Gierasinska.

“Whether you’re short on space or just want to create a more organised bedroom, multi-functional pieces can help.”

“Swap out a traditional bedside table for one with drawers or shelves to keep night-time essentials tucked away,” suggests Gierasinska.

“A storage bench at the end of your bed can double as seating, and a place to store bedding. While a dressing table with hidden compartments keeps clutter to a minimum,” she adds.
