Holi is one of India’s most vibrant and joyous festivals, but amidst the excitement of colors and celebrations, it is crucial to take extra care of your skin. The combination of sun exposure and harsh chemicals in colors can cause irritation, dryness, and damage to the skin. To ensure your skin remains healthy and protected, adopting a proper skincare routine and avoiding certain ingredients in skincare products before Holi is essential.
Harsh Cleansers and Soaps
Dr Nirupama Parwanda, Dermatologist & Founder, Zolie Skin Clinic, advises against using harsh soaps and face washes to remove Holi colors. “People often resort to aggressive cleansing methods, but this is not the proper approach. Many soaps and face cleansers contain chemicals that disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance, leading to dryness and irritation,” she explains. Instead, she recommends using organic skincare products and avoiding scrubbing the skin immediately after Holi, as this can exacerbate irritation.
Exfoliants Like AHAs and BHAs
Exfoliating acids such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid should be avoided in the days leading up to Holi. “AHAs and BHAs increase skin sensitivity to the sun and environmental aggressors, making the skin more prone to redness and irritation,” Dr. Parwanda cautions. Avoiding these exfoliants a few days before Holi can help minimize sensitivity and protect the skin’s barrier.
Alcohol-Based Ingredients
Toners and cleansers that contain alcohol-based substances, such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and denatured alcohol, can strip the skin of its natural oils. “These ingredients can lead to excessive dryness and make the skin more susceptible to damage from Holi colors,” Dr. Parwanda warns. Instead, she suggests opting for alcohol-free skincare products to maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance.
Avoid Exfoliating and Bleaching Before Holi
Dr. Kashish Kalra, MBBS, MD, Dermatologist, Hair Transplant Surgeon, HOD, Max Hospital & Founder, Dr. Kalra Skin Clinic, emphasizes the importance of avoiding exfoliating treatments and bleaching before Holi. “Exfoliants like AHAs, BHAs, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and kojic acid should be avoided in the days preceding Holi. These ingredients make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk of inflammation,” he explains. He also advises stopping the use of medical-grade exfoliants, such as retinol and retinoic acid, at least a week before Holi and avoiding high concentrations of vitamin C three to four days before the festival.
Bleaching should also be avoided close to Holi. “If you plan to bleach your skin or hair, give yourself at least a week’s gap. Last-minute bleaching increases the skin’s vulnerability to UV damage,” Dr. Kalra notes. Additionally, scrubbing the skin right before Holi should be avoided, as it can make the skin more prone to irritation and damage.
Pre-Holi Skincare Tips
To protect your skin from potential damage, Dr. Parwanda and Dr. Kalra recommend following these essential skincare tips:
Apply a thick layer of coconut oil or moisturizer to form a protective barrier on the skin.
Use hydrating serums and gentle cleansers to keep the skin moisturized.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield the skin from harmful UV rays.
Drink plenty of water to maintain skin hydration from within.
By taking these precautions, you can enjoy Holi’s festivities without compromising your skin’s health. Proper preparation ensures that your skin remains nourished, protected, and ready to embrace the vibrant spirit of the festival.
