The obsession with dramatic weight loss has spread like wildfire on social media. With an overload of quick-fix diet and workout advice, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, renowned nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, who has helped leading Bollywood stars like Kareena Kapoor, emphasises, that weight control is not just about the number on the weighing scale.
In an Instagram post on January 20, Rujuta Diwekar shared the importance of achieving sustainable weight loss and prioritising overall health. She highlighted the risks of focusing too much on drastic weight fluctuations driven by the scale, urging people to embrace long-term wellness practices rather than chasing quick, extreme transformations.
In her post, Rujuta explained that unsustainable weight loss can hinder the body’s ability to function properly. She warned that such approaches, instead of improving health, could lead to potential health issues. She advised her followers to prioritize overall well-being and refrain from fixating on the numbers on the scale.
A recent study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology challenges the reliability of Body Mass Index (BMI) as an accurate measure of health and fitness.
Highlighting this issue, Rujuta Diwekar addressed it in a video, explaining that many people feel frustrated and discouraged when adhering to strict diets and exercise routines to lose weight, only to see little to no results. This often leads them to resort to quicker, more extreme weight loss methods, which can be harmful.
Rujuta emphasised that to truly understand the distinction between body fat and overall fitness, it’s important to consider three key factors:
Size:
Rujuta explained that a reduction in body size is a clear sign of fat loss, indicating that we’re shedding excess fat.
Shape:
She emphasised paying attention to changes in body shape, particularly around the waist. A shrinking waistline reflects the loss of visceral fat, the fat stored around internal organs, which is a positive sign of health.
Capacity:
Rujuta stressed that true health and fitness are also reflected in the body’s increased capacity. This could be seen in small improvements, such as taking more stairs, playing longer with a child without discomfort, or extending workout durations. These signs show progress in overall fitness and a healthy approach to weight loss.
