NAFLD may be silent, but it is not invisible. Small, consistent changes to your daily routine can protect your liver and prevent serious complications
Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is silently affecting millions, often without any symptoms until it is too late. Once considered rare, NAFLD is now a global health concern, driven by poor diet, sedentary lifestyles, and rising obesity rates. Dr Lohith U, Consultant, Surgical Gastroenterology Bariatric and GI Oncology, Manipal Hospital Sarjapur Road shares all you need to know:
Initial Signs of NAFLD
NAFLD is often called as a silent disease because it progresses without obvious symptoms. However, some subtle red flags include
Persistent weakness and fatigue. Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite. Abdominal discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the upper right side. Pale stools and dark urine. Presence of jaundice in advanced cases.
Ignoring these signs can allow NAFLD to progress to more severe liver damage, including fibrosis, cirrhosis or even liver failure.
Prevention and Treatment options in NAFLD
There are no approved medications for NAFLD. Lifestyle modification is the most effective way to manage and reverse the condition.
- Diet: Cut down on processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats. Consume diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats like nuts and olive oil.
- Regularly Exercise: Consider moderate intensity of work out. Even 30 minute brisk walk, at least 5 days a week.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Shedding even 5-10% of body weight can significantly reduce liver fat and maintaining Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 30 is important
- Blood sugar & Cholesterol Levels: NAFLD is linked to metabolic conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol, so regular health checkups and keeping them under control is important.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water and limit unnecessary medication or supplements that may strain the liver.
NAFLD may be silent, but it is not invisible. Small, consistent changes to your daily routine can protect your liver and prevent serious complications. Any changes one notices in health, better to meet a specialist, as early detection in liver health can be lifesaving.
