India has a long history of being ruled by kings and maharajas, which is why it is home to numerous forts, both big and small. Many of these forts have become national heritage sites, requiring tickets for entry and being maintained by the government to preserve their historical significance. However, there is still a unique fort where thousands of people still live rent-free. What’s even more fascinating is the quirky traditions of these residents, including painting wedding invitations on their walls alongside distributing traditional cards.

Instagram user Shivangi Khanna recently shared a video that has gone viral on social media. In the video, she highlights India’s only living fort, located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Known as Sonar Fort (Golden Fort), it is home to around 4,000 residents who live there without paying rent, making it a remarkable cultural and historical site.

Wedding Invitations On Walls

Shivangi shared several intriguing details about the fort in her video. One of the most notable is the tradition of painting wedding invitations on the walls of houses. For example, a painted depiction of Lord Ganesh alongside wedding details invites anyone who sees it to join the celebration.

Jaisalmer, often referred to as the Golden City, is famous for its stunning sandstone architecture. The fort itself was built by King Rawal Jaisal in 1156 and remains a living testament to the region’s rich history.

Viral on Social Media

The video has garnered nearly 6 lakh views, with many users sharing their thoughts in the comments. Some found the tradition of painting wedding cards particularly fascinating, while others mentioned that people also live in other forts like Chittorgarh.
