Jazz/ soul artist Vasundhara Vee’s rendition won heavy praises after it was featured during the main fashion show of designer Sabyasachi’s 25th anniversary event. It was held on January 24, 2025, at the Jio World Convention Centre. Rohan Rajadhyaksha (known for Gully Gang, Bambai Meri Jaan, Yeh Ballet, Waack Girls etc) had produced the song that perfectly showcased 25 years of Sabyasachi and his works globally. The soaring orchestral arrangement had very modern sounds infused into it to mirror the Sabyasachi brand values.

News18 got into an exclusive conversation with Vasundhara Vee where we asked her how she felt performing at such a milestone event. The singer replied, “This was a moment of pride for me being the lover of the brand and also a woman. This brand has always stood for strong feminine energy. Sabyasachi has always lobbied for that through his campaigns and designs. To see an ideology like this winning internationally, it was a matter of great honour for me.”

She added, “I had already sung for one of Sabyasachi’s campaigns before and we’d been planning to do a crossover thing with Indian element. This turned out to be the best moment. This is something that had been brewing for a while.”

Talking about how the project came to her, Vasundhara said, “Sabyasachi called me one afternoon and told me that ‘hey I want you to make this piece of music for my finale.’ He sang for me to make me understand how it was sounding like in his mind. He asked me to sing from my pain and let my voice soar. This song was supposed to be a symbol for all of his story and what all he has been through in these 25 years to become a global brand. This is why he wanted both Bengali and English to show his equal presence and pride in both the worlds.”

When asked about the conversation that followed post the event between her and the celebrated designer, Vee said, “That’s a little personal but he sent me a message saying that it was spectacular. The team had tears in their eyes. It was an emotional moment. Sabyasachi is a king. He is everything that royalty stands for – the good kind. Minimalism and opulence can co-exist in his world so it’s absolutely fantastic.”

Deepika Padukone had opened Sabyasachi’s show that Vasundhara sang for. “I loved her ramp walk. I am her biggest fan. I have done music for one of her ads. I really love everything that she does. I adore her,” she says.

Moving further, we asked Vasundhara her opinion on the current scenario of the music industry compared to the olden days. She says, “The industry has expanded. There used to be a gate keeping kind of structure in the olden days so very few people came into the public eye. Now, lots more singers are coming forward due to which great music is being seen. The consumers have different moods too for all kinds of music. Everyone is getting representation which is great. But I agree that some music are not good so I just tune away from it.”

So, which designer does she want to collaborate with now? The singer answers, “For me, it’s always the message I am deeply connected to. All the films I have sung for or the designers I have worked with, they were all moments where strong women were celebrated. That’s something I want to be associated with always.”

Discussing about the explicit music dominating the charts today, Vasundhara said, “My personal preference is not towards music that is abusive or extreme is any way. However, I am not judging the people who do it. They might be making such music because there’s listenership. People might find this verbal aggression a release from their stress. But I don’t like it.”

‎The Mumbai-based artist has been among a few celebrated powerhouse vocalists synonymous with the revival of RnB, Soul and Jazz in live circuits. Her playback credits include songs such as Dhaakad (title track) from the Kangana Ranaut-starrer and Besuri from Ved which featured Riteish and Genelia Deshmukh, as well as the popular web series Bandish Bandits 2.
